We kicked off the Creativity in HE theme, with Marcus Soanes (Principal Lecturer. Professional Programmes ,City Law School) for this first City St George's Learning circle. Marcus talked about how drawing on multi-disciplinary research, Master of Laws students come to understand how lawyers use stories and narratology to advance their clients’ best interest most notably through the creation of compelling narratives or ‘case theories’. Purposeful storytelling is considered within the fiercely competitive forum of the adversarial trial, and students are trained to engage their affective as well as cognitive faculties to create persuasive and yet legally conforming stories that place human experience, emotion and desire at the heart of lawyering and thus the justice system.
