key objective of City’s Internationalisation Strategy is to “Provide internationally informed curricula which incorporate global perspectives and support students to develop their inter-cultural competencies”. The aim is not only to create an inclusive environment for international students, but also to develop a global outlook for all City students, including enhancing their employability as ‘global citizens’ and preparing them to live and work internationally.
To support this objective, a Task and Finish Group, consisting of representatives from all five Schools, the Students’ Union, LEaD and Student and Academic Services, was formed. The Group’s remit included developing a “Curriculum Internationalisation Toolkit” to support City staff in enhancing the international dimensions of their programmes.
The Toolkit aims to provide a curated selection of resources, focusing on materials, such as brief tips and guides, case studies and videos, that can be readily incorporated into practice. It covers the following areas:
- An introduction to curriculum internationalisation, its rationale and principles
- Curriculum design (how course content addresses international contexts and issues)
- Learning and teaching (providing opportunities for intercultural communication, collaboration and reflection on global perspectives)
- Assessment (assessing the application of knowledge in a range of different ways to reflect the diversity of students)
- Student experience (such as international exchanges and educational opportunities)
- Student support (good practice in supporting students from diverse backgrounds)
The Toolkit will be rolled out across the University over the coming weeks, and a range of dissemination activities is currently underway.
We are also looking for additional case studies covering internationalisation activities at City. If you would like to contribute, or to learn more about the Toolkit, please contact Justin Needle.
